Skin is the boundary to what I am. It is my skin that keeps my physical form restrained and contains the energy that defines me. My skin is my barrier between me and the rest of the world. With this work I am challenging this boundry of skin. In doing this I create a vulnerable condition, and it is in this vulnerability space that the work finds its power. Through the process exposing these psychological discomforts, I hope to learn from them and grow stronger. This work is about being alone in the world and alone in your body. Most people live in a constant state of dissatisfaction with their own life and never really feel comfortable (at home) in their own body. I am interested in exploring the uncomfortable nature of my being in my body, and how it is a very real feeling and common experience. I document these performances through the use of video. These videos are a way in which I can see myself from a perspective outside my own body. It is important to see myself experiencing these performances, in hopes that I can teach myself how to really open my eyes to see who I am. This art practice aids me in understanding what it is to be me inside my body.
